Our gallery items are sought by serious collectors and sophisticated decorators. Our finest ceremonial masks, textiles and baskets from Africa and Asia are authentic. They were produced for and in some cases, used in a parade or ceremony. Once a traditional art is valued for its intrinsic beauty by outsiders, whether they be academics, travelers or missionaries-- that item often becomes a collectible.
The African wedding basket, also know as a beer basket is a perfect example. Traditionally used to seal a marriage proposal in South Africa, the best quality liquid-tight baskets are now produced by a handful of master weavers and their apprentices, and are prized by collectors. This art form survives and is an important income source for these basket producers.
